JAMES, JOHN . He was Defynnog's brother; director of education in Glam. 1903-1929. He had a brilliant academic career after having worked for a time in a grocer's shop in the Rhondda valley, Glam. At 16, as the holder of an open scholarship, he went to University College, Cardiff. Having taken a first-class degree (London Univ.) he went to Balliol College, Oxford, where he graduated with a first in mathematics. He gained a research B.Sc. degree and then proceeded to the Univ. of Erlangen, Germany, where he gained a Ph.D. in electronics. He did much to encourage the teaching of Welsh in the schools of Glam.
