HAMER , EDWARD ( 1840 - 1911 ; DWB , 335). B. 6 Feb. 1840 at Llanidloes , son of the shoemaker Meredith Hamer and his wife Ann . He d. at Bordesley , Birmingham , 24 Nov. 1911 , aged 72.

HAMER , EDWARD ( c. 1840 1911 ), antiquary ; b. c. 1830 at Llanidloes, Mont. , son of Meredith Hamer [of the Close , a fuller . From Battersea training college (where he won a gold medal ,)] he went to teach in Monmouthshire — at Snatchwood , Tal-y-waun ( 1867 ), and at Abersychan ( 1875 ). In 1878 he returned to Llanidloes , where he lived for some years [as book-keeper to a relation in the cabinet-making business.] He then moved to Birmingham , and is thought to have d. there early in the present century. His first published work was The Chartist Outbreak at Llanidloes ( 1867 , 2nd ed. in 1939 ). He was a contributor to Arch. Camb. (e.g. ‘ Earthworks of Ancient Arwystli ’), and to Mont. Coll. , in which were published his articles on the parish history of Llangurig ( 1869-70 ), of Llanidloes ( 1871-8 ), and of Trefeglwys ( 1879 , uncompleted). He also gave assistance to W. V. Lloyd (q.v.) in compiling his Sheriffs of Montgomeryshire , and to J. Y. W. Lloyd (q.v.) in the preparation of his History of Powys Fadog .
