John Powell

Caroline Mary
Foulkes
. He was educated at
King's School

Chester
,
Shrewsbury
and
Balliol College
,
Oxford
, where he graduated
B.A.
1837
and
M.A.
1840
. He was ordained
deacon
in
June, 1839
with a title to the curacy of
Halkin
,
Flintshire
and in July of the same year he was ordained
priest
. He was given the living of
Llandyssil, Mont.
, in
1857
and he was made
Archdeacon of Montgomery
in
1861
, an office that carried with it a canonry in the cathedral. He was presented to the living of
Whittington, Shropshire
in
1879
and he stayed there until his death. He married
Jane Margaret
, the daughter of
Edward
Lloyd
,
Rhagad
and they had one daughter who died when she was 14.
He was the
author of several handbooks for use in Sunday schools
. He read a paper on the history of the
Church in Wales
at the
Church Conference
in
Leeds
in
1872
. He d.
January 26, 1886
and was buried in
St. Asaph cathedral
.
