Born 16 August 1858 in China, son of Joseph Henry Wade of Shanghai, and educated at Monmouth School and Oriel College, Oxford (scholar). He took a first class in Classical Honours Moderations (1879) and a second class in Literae Humaniores (1882). He was made deacon in 1885 and ordained priest in 1886. After serving as curate of Basing, Hampshire, from 1885 to 1888, he was appointed to the chair of Latin at St. David's College, Lampeter, and remained there for forty-four years, retiring from his chair and from the Senior Tutorship in 1932. He married Rachel Elinor, daughter of the Rev. F.H. Joyce, and sister of Gilbert Cunningham Joyce, Bishop of Monmouth. In 1934 he received the degree of D.D. (honoris causa) of the University of Wales, and he was also a canon of St Asaph Cathedral. He died at Monmouth on 15 October, 1941, and was buried there.

As a teacher at St. David's College for over forty years, Wade exercised a lasting influence on generations of alumni of the College and through them on the Church in Wales. In his teaching he laid great emphasis on thoroughness, and on the unity of all knowledge. In a farewell message to his students he expressed the hope that they would ever make progress in learning and true godliness.

His literary output was considerable. It included Old Testament History (first edition, 1901; twelfth edition, 1934); New Testament History (first edition, 1922; second edition, 1932): commentaries on Genesis, 2 Samuel, Isaiah, and most of the Minor Prophets: and The Documents of the New Testament, 1934. He was also much interested in topography and was wholly or partly responsible for the volumes in the Methuen Little Guide series in South Wales, Monmouthshire, Somerset, and Herefordshire.
