Born 25 June 1857 at Maesteg, Glamorganshire. A collier, he began to preach, in English, after he had been injured at work, and went to an academy at Aberafan and, in 1881, to the Baptist College, Pontypool. He won a scholarship (£30) to Bangor university college and at the end of the first session was awarded the Lord Penrhyn Scholarship (£50); he graduated B.A. and M.A., University of London. He ministered at Saledine Nook, Huddersfield (1887-93), Myrtle Street, Liverpool, 1893-1914 and Sutton 1915-20. He was lecturer in homiletics at Manchester College, and, after his retirement, he lectured at the Bible College, Swansea. He could preach in Welsh but in English he was one of the foremost preachers of his generation in England. He published volumes of sermons, books on the Old Testament and on philosophy, and volumes of poems, The Iris and other poems; Psyche and other poems and Caniadau John Garth (the only work in Welsh). He died 20 September 1944 and was buried at Gorseinon.
