Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities

. He served in the
Middle East
in
World War I
(and was
mentioned in dispatches
twice) and in intelligence in
World War II
. He was the
editor
of the
Journal of Hellenic Studies

, and the
author of numerous papers on history and archaeology
and of standard catalogues of classical antiquities.
