, for whom he undertook several important missions. At the outbreak of
World War I
he joined the
Royal Engineers
and went to
Canada
in
1917
where he represented the
War Office
as
director of inland waterways and docks
. The work involved
placing contracts for and the supervision of the building of auxiliary vessels for ocean, coastal and canal work
, and also the
purchase and charter of craft
for similar work. He became
lieut.-colonel
in
1918
and was made a
C.B.E.
in
1919
. Later he acted as
special representative
of the
Comptroller of the Admiralty
and subsequently represented the
Ministry of Shipping
. He
played hockey
for
Wales
against
Ireland
in
1910
. He m.
8 Oct. 1919
,
Enid Strathearn
, daughter of
Sir
John
Hendrie
,
Lieutenant Governor
of the Province of
Ontario
, and they had three daughters. He made his home at
Montreal
and d.
