He graduated with honours in Welsh in 1941 and M.A. in 1953. He did not complete his theological course as he accepted a call to Salem, Porthmadog, and was ordained there 21 July 1943. He moved to Jerusalem, Burry Port and was inducted there on 17 November 1954. He remained there until his death in hospital at Bangor, 3 June 1964, as a result of a sudden heart attack. He was in great demand as a preacher, and in his preaching he belonged to the poetic and illustrative tradition.

He blossomed early as a poet, winning many prizes in local eisteddfodau before winning the crown at the national eisteddfod at Cardigan (1942) for a poem on ' Ebargofiant '. Simplicity, conciseness, skilfulness and lyricism characterized his poetry. He published Hanes Eglwys Annibynnol Jerusalem, Burry Port, 1812-1962 (1962), and after his death the substance of his M.A. thesis, Y Soned yn Gymraeg hyd 1900 was published (1967). On 14 August 1946 he married Ffion Mai, daughter of David Thomas, Bangor (1880 - 1967), and they had two sons.
