JEHU , THOMAS JOHN ( 1871 - 1943 ), geologist ;

b. in Brynafon , Llanfair-Caereinion, Mont. , 19 Feb. 1871 . He was educated at Oswestry High School and at Edinburgh University , where he graduated M.B. , Ch.M. , 1893 , and B.Sc. , 1894 at Cambridge he took a 1st class in both parts of Nat. Sc. Tripos in 1897-98 and 2nd class in Moral Sc. Tripos 1899 ; he graduated M.D. (Edinburgh) in 1902 .

His first important research was a bathymetrical survey of the lakes of Snowdonia and eastern Caernarfonshire , published by the Royal Society of Edinburgh , 1902 . He was appointed lecturer in Geology at St. Andrews University in 1903 , and in 1914 Regius Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at Edinburgh , where he took a prominent part in the academic and scientific life of the city. His earlier work mainly related to the glacial deposits of Wales , and after settling in Edinburgh he made important contributions to Scottish geology, mainly in relation to the older rocks of the Highlands and the Hebrides . He was a member of the Royal Commission on Coast Erosion ( 1906 ), President of the Geological Society of Edinburgh ( 1917-18 ), and Fellow and Vice-President ( 1929-32 ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . He d. 18 July 1943 at Edinburgh .
