, where he graduated with 2nd class honours in Modern History in

1885 to 1886
he was
lord-in-waiting

Queen
Victoria
. He had estates in
Lincolnshire

Buckinghamshire
and a seat at
Lligwy
,
Anglesey
. Throughout his life he devoted much of his leisure to branches of natural science, especially
astronomy
,
botany
and
entomology
, and was a
Fellow
both of the
Society of Antiquaries
and of the
Geological Society of London
. As
president
of the
Anglesey Antiquarian Society and Field Club
from its formation in
1912
to within a short time of his death, he took a
keen interest in archaeological activities
, and did much to facilitate the investigation of the
Lligwy Romano-British village
. He was also associated with the excavation at
Segontium
and
Conovium
(
Caerhun
). For his services to national culture the
University of Wales
in
1936
conferred on him the honorary degree of
LL.D.
