Born 2 December 1857 at Ynyscynhaearn, Caernarfonshire, son of Thomas Jones, minister (Congl.), Eisteddfa, Cricieth, and Jane Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Jones, of the same place.
Educated at Porthmadog grammar school, Grove Park school, Wrexham, U.C.N.W., Bangor, and St. Bartholomew's Hospital, he became M.D. (Lond.), 1885, F.R.C.S. (Eng.), 1886, and F.R.C.P. (Lond.), 1908. He specialised in mental diseases and was junior medical officer at the Royal Earlswood Institution, 1880-82, and Colney Hatch, 1882-88; resident physician and superintendent of Earlswood Asylum, 1888-93 and of the London County Council Asylum, Claybury, 1893-1916. He made a name for Claybury by developing modern methods of treating mental diseases. He was lecturer in mental diseases at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, consulting physician in mental diseases to the military forces, London and Aldershot commands, and Lord Chancellor's Visitor in Lunacy. He served as temporary Lieut. Col. in the R.A.M.C. and was awarded the C.B.E. (Military division) in 1919. He was knighted in 1917. He assumed the additional surname of Armstrong in 1913. He was a J.P. and Dep. Lieut. of London and Caernarfonshire, and a member of the council and vice-president of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion.
He married in 1893, Margaret Elizabeth (died May 1943), elder daughter of Sir Owen Roberts, London, and Plas Dinas, Caernarfon, and they had one son (Ronald Owen Lloyd Armstrong-Jones whose son, Lord Snowdon, married Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II), and two daughters. He died 31 January 1943.
