JONES, RICHARD (1757? - 1814), cleric and writer

Name: Richard Jones
Date of birth: 1757?
Date of death: 1814
Gender: Male
Occupation: cleric and writer
Area of activity: Literature and Writing; Religion
Author: Robert Thomas Jenkins

Born 1757? ordained deacon (Bangor) 1782, with no degree given, but priested in 1783 as B.A. of Jesus College, Oxford; he was licensed to the curacy of Ruthin, and may well have been usher at Ruthin school (other instances of this at Ruthin are known), for his obituary in The Cambrian says he was ' critically versed in the Hebrew, Greek, and Latin languages. ' On 10 July 1806 he was instituted as rector of the adjoining parish of Llanychan, but his curacy at Ruthin seems to have continued - in 1810 he was instituted into the ' evening lectureship ' there. He died at Llanychan 23 April 1814, 'aged 57,' according to his obituary notice. He published commentaries on the four Gospels (seriatim, 1801, 1802, 1804, 1807), and Taer alwad ar yr anystyriol (Dolgellau, 1806). It seems certain also that he was the author of Undeb Crefyddol, neu Rybudd yn erbyn Schism (Wrexham, 1792), which provoked, in 1793, a reply (Sylwadau ar Draethawd a elwir Undeb Crefyddol, etc.) by Thomas Jones (1756 - 1820).
