Born at Tan-y-coed, Pen-llin, Glamorganshire, 30 December 1817, son of Evan Williams. He was educated at the Eagles school, Cowbridge. He was admitted to full membership of the church at Pen-llin at the age of 18, and began to preach at the age of 21. He kept a school for a time at Brynsadler and Brychtwn, and was then engaged in trade at Cowbridge. In 1844 he received a call to Pen-clawdd, Gower, and was ordained at the Bridgend Association, 1848. In 1851 he went to Bethany (English) chapel, Swansea, where, apart from five years at Crickhowel, he spent the rest of his life. He died 10 November 1900. He was a popular preacher all his life, but it was as an author that he shone. His first book was Y Puritaniaid (Denbigh, 1860); after which appeared A Memoir of Wm. Griffiths, Gower (London, 1863). He is probably the 'William Williams, Crughywel,' who published Gair at y Prophwydi (Holywell) in 1870. His chief work is his Welsh Calvinistic Methodism (London, 1872, 2nd imp. 1884), a book which shows considerable historical ability. He was editor of Y Cylchgrawn , 1851-5, and a large number of articles written by him appeared in Y Drysorfa, Y Traethodydd, and Y Geninen. Many of them deal with Methodism in Glamorgan and all are very readable.
