Born 1 July 1828 at Dowlais, son of Daniel Roberts, minister of Bryn Seion Congregational church (Hanes Eglwysi Annibynnol Cymru, ii, 280-1). From Ffrŵd-y-fâl Academy he went in 1845 to Coward College in London, but almost immediately removed to Carmarthen Presbyterian College. With a Dr. Williams scholarship (1850) he went up to Glasgow University, where he remained for three years; but though he won a Latin medal, ill health forced him to leave without a degree. He was prone to melancholy, and an unwilling (and indifferent) preacher; so, after teaching in various schools in England, he opened a grammar school at Cardiff. In 1856 he was appointed to succeed Edward Davies (1796 - 1857) as classical tutor at Brecon Congregational College. He was joint-editor of Y Beirniad from 1859 till 1872. In 1872 his mind became deranged, and he died at Malvern on 9 March.
