REES , DANIEL ( 1793 - 1857 ), cleric and hymnwriter ;

b. 8 Feb. 1793 at Felin Newydd , Llangeler, Carms. , son of Ebenezer Rees . He was educated at Castellhywel school and Jesus College , Oxford . He was curate of Goetre, Mon. , 1818-23 , and in 1823 was appointed perpetual curate of Aberystruth . He d. 13 June 1857 . At the request of the bishop of Llandaff he published Casgliad o Psalmau a Hymnau ( W. Rees , Llandovery ) in 1831 , and A Selection of Psalms and Hymns ( Llandovery ) in 1832 . Both books were very popular in the Established Church , for the 6th imp. of the Welsh book appeared in 1860 and the 7th imp. of the English book in 1858 . There are a few translations and original hymns by Rees himself in both books.
