Pontardulais
and the son was for some time employed at the
Hendy tin-plate works
. After he had started to
preach
he went to
T.
Richards
's school at
Aberavan
and, in
1880
, was admitted to
Pontypool Academy
. He won a scholarship to the
University College
at
Bangor
, the year it was opened and graduated
B.A. (London)
with honours in
Greek
. In
1886
he was appointed
tutor in classics
at the
Baptist College
,
Llangollen
, and became
principal
of that college (after it had moved to
Bangor
) in
1896
. He had already, in
1888
, obtained the
M.A.
degree of
London University
. He was considered a good scholar in the language and literature of the
New Testament
and was a member of the committee appointed by the
University of Wales
to bring out a new
Welsh
translation of the
New Testament
. He was
editor
of
Seren Gomer
for ten years. He was a thoughtful
preacher
but made no effort to be popular. He wrote voluminously to the various periodicals. He d.
25 July 1923
and was buried in
Sardis
chapel burial-ground,
Llanedy
.
