MAURICE , DAVID ( 1626 - 1702 ), cleric and translator ;

son of Andrew Maurice , dean of S. Asaph . This Andrew Maurice was, according to Browne Willis , a Shropshire gentleman , but according to Wood ( Athen. Oxon. ), a native of Denbighshire . ‘ Llyfr Silin ’ and Walter Davies ( Gwallter Mechain ) make him the eighth in descent from Ieuan Gethin . Philip Yorke ( Royal Tribes ) says he was ‘ of a younger branch of Clenennau .’ But his son, David Maurice , according to D. R. Thomas ( S. Asaph ), bore ‘ not the shield of Owen Gwynedd nor of Einion Efell , but that of Cunedda Wledig .’ David Maurice matriculated from Jesus College , Oxford , 3 June 1651 . He graduated B.A. 1654/5 , and M.A. 1657 , from New College . He held the following ecclesiastical preferments — vicar of Llangernyw , 1662 ; rector of Cegidog S. George , Denbighshire , 1663 ; cursal prebendary of S. Asaph , 1664 ; canon , 1666 ; vicar of Llanasa, Flints. , 1666 ; rector of Gwytherin , 1675 ; vicar of Abergele , 1684 ; of Betws-yn-Rhos , 1684 ; of Llanarmon-yn-Iâl , 1696 . He held the last three livings at the time of his death, and was buried in Abergele churchyard, where there is a Latin epitaph on his tomb. His ‘information’ relating to the ‘ Popish Plot ’ was printed in The Information of J. Sergeant and D. Morris relating to the Popish Plot , 1681 . In addition he published The Promised Reed; a sermon preach'd … for the support of weak Christians , 1700 , and Welsh translations of two of the works of Theophilus Dorrington , under the titles, Arweiniwr cartrefol i'r iawn a'r buddiol dderbyniad o Swperyr Arglwydd, … 1700 , and Cynffwrdd i'r gwan Gristion, neu'r gorsen ysig , 1702 .
