Born 11 April 1664, son of Pierce Lewis of Plas Llanfihangel Tre'r Beirdd, Anglesey, registrar of Bangor diocese, and his wife, Elizabeth Lloyd of Henblas, Llangristiolus. Entering Jesus College, Oxford, in 1681, he graduated in 1684, and seems to have remained at Oxford till 1690, to supervise the printing of the Bible, which is commonly associated with his kinsman bishop William Lloyd (1627 - 1717) of S. Asaph - at Oxford, Lewis was nicknamed ' the Welsh Rabbi.'

In 1690 he got the living of Llanfachraeth in Anglesey, became vicar of Bangor in 1693, and rector of Llanfairfechan in 1698. He died at Ruthin in May 1699. His edition of the Bible is not highly rated.
