's fame rests upon the diary which he began in

and kept up till
March 1879
; parts of this (
June 1876-Dec. 1877
) have been lost, but considerable selections of the remainder, edited by
William
Plomer
, were published in 3 volumes in
1938-40
.
Kilvert
's observations on nature and on social life in the
Wye valley
are of the highest interest and value.
