Born at Derlwyn, Carmarthenshire, son of David Jones who kept school there. From Swansea Normal College he went to the Northern Hospital, Liverpool; he graduated in London University, and was F.R.C.S. Settling down in 1873 at Manchester, he soon became consultant and operating surgeon (one of the first to set up in that capacity). In 1880 he was appointed lecturer in surgery at Owens College, and in 1890 professor of surgery in what was then the Victoria University.

He became chief surgeon of the Welsh hospital (see Hughes, Alfred William) in South Africa during the Boer War, and died there 18 June 1900.
