JONES , HUMPHREY ROWLAND ( 1832 - 1895 ), evangelist ;

b. at Gwarcwm Bach , Llancynfelyn, Cards. , 11 Oct. 1832 , son of Humphrey Jones and Elizabeth , daughter of Hugh Rowlands , Tre'rddôl . His parents emigrated to America in 1847 , and he was brought up by his aunt at Tre'rddôl . He began to preach at the age of 15, and in 1854 , being unsuccessful as a candidate for the Wesleyan ministry, he left for Oshkosh , Wisconsin , where revivals were in full swing. Jones caught the fire, and on returning to Tre'raddôl started the Welsh Revival of 1858-60 , and, with David Morgan , Yspyty ( 1814 - 1883 ) (q.v.) , was very successful. The strain proved too much for him, and he retired, leaving the field to Morgan . In 1871 , he returned to America with his health impaired physically and mentally . He was a hospital patient at Winnebago , Wisconsin , for five years. On his discharge he resumed preaching and took charge of small Welsh churches at Cambria and South Bend , Minnesota . He d. at Chilton , Wisconsin , 8 May 1895 , and was buried at Brant , Wisconsin .

JONES , HUMPHREY ROWLAND ( 1832 - 1895 ; DWB , 469).

His father's name was Hugh Jones . His birthplace was not Gwarcwm Bach . His christening is recorded in the parish register on 10 Nov. as that of the son of Hugh and Elizabeth Jones of ‘ Trerddol alias Yniscapel ’. He was born either in the home of his mother's parents, the Half-way Inn , Tre'rddôl , or in that of his father's parents, Ynyscapel . He was between 4 and 6 years of age when the family settled at Gwarcwm Bach sometime between 1836 and 1838 .
