JONES , RHYS (or RICE ) ( 1713 - 1801 ), antiquary and poet ;

eldest son of John Jones of Blaenau , Llanfachreth, Mer. He was educated at Dolgelley and Shrewsbury , it being his intention to become a lawyer . When, however, he was 18 years of age his father died, and he returned home to Blaenau where he spent the remainder of his life. In 1741 he m. Ann , daughter of Richard Griffith of Tan-yr-allt, Caerns. He published Cerdd Newydd iw chanu yn y Lloerig Gymdeithas yr hon sydd wedi i sefydlu iw chadw yn Lloerig Nant Tafarn yn fisol beunydd ar ddydd Iau nesaf o flaen y Llawn Lloer , (together with) Cywydd i ofyn gwn i'r pendefig Wm. Llwyd o Riwedog Ysgr. (undated; c. 1750 ); Gorchestion Beirdd Cymru: Neu Flodau Godidowgrwydd Awen, Wedi eu lloffa, a'u dethol, allan o waith rhai o'r Awduriaid ardderchog, a fu erioed yn yr Iaith Gymraeg. O Gasgliad Rhys Jones, o'r Tyddyn Mawr yn y Brinaich, ym mhlwyf Llanfachreth, yn Swydd Feirion … ( Shrewsbury , printed by Stafford Prys , in the Year MDCC. LXXIII ); Can neu Fyfyrdod ar Ddaioni yr Arglwydd yn anfon yd i'n Gwlad er ein Hachub Rhag Y Newyn a'i Ganlyniadau etc., ar fesur ‘Old Darby’ ( Denbigh , 1817 ). In 1864 , another edition of the Gorchestion was published, revised, and annotated with additions, by Cynddelw ( Robert Ellis , 1812 - 1875 , q.v.) . It should be observed that Rhys Jones was living at Tyddyn Mawr and not at Blaenau when he published his Gorchestion , which is a selection of the works of Aneirin , Taliesin , Llywarch Hen , and other poets ; Rhys Jones wrote his awdl in praise of William Vaughan of Cors-y-gedol (q.v.) on the pattern of the awdlau by Gutun Owen and William Llŷn included in this collection. His original poetry is to be found in N.L.W. MS. 3059 ( Mostyn MS. 163 ), i.e. ‘ Y Llyfr Gwyrdd gan Rhys Jones ’; his works were published in 1818 under the title Gwaith Prydyddawl Y Diweddar Rice Jones o'r Blaenau, Meirion. Gan Rice Jones Owen, Wyr yr Awdur . He d. 14 Feb. 1801 and was buried in Llanfachreth church.
