Born 8 April 1788 at Glynadda, Llanpumpsaint, Carmarthenshire. He was brought up as an Independent at Pencader and was educated by David Davis of Castell Hywel and at Carmarthen Academy (1807-11). He was ordained at Llwynrhydowen, 30 August 1811, as co-minister with David Davis of Castell Hywel, and opened a school at Llandysul - at that time he was an Arminian although he ultimately became an Arian. He did not remain long at Llandysul, for in 1814 he was elected tutor in classics at Carmarthen Academy and minister of Seion chapel, Llanddarog, where he remained until his premature death, 8 September 1830. His appointment to Carmarthen caused some perturbation, and David Davis of Neath and John James of Gellionnen thought of opening a new Academy - but nothing came of it. During the last five years of his life he was minister of the Unitarian church at Carmarthen. He delighted in the literature, history, and archaeology of Wales, and wrote verse under the pseudonym Glynadda. He was buried in Capel Seion cemetery.
