Born 16 October 1831 in a cottage on the slopes above Tal-y-llyn, Meirionethshire, son of William and Elizabeth Jones. The family moved to the village of Tregorwyr and thence to Dolgelley, where Eos Bradwen published Y Seraph neu Gyfaill Y Cerddor Ieuanc, which contained hymn-tunes and airs. From Dolgelley the family moved in 1858 to Aberystwyth. In 1863 the son was appointed leader of the choir at St Asaph cathedral where he laboured for fifteen years.

He won many prizes for poems at various eisteddfodau. At the Llandudno eisteddfod, 1864, he won the prize for the libretto of a cantata on the subject of 'The Prodigal Son.' During the same year he composed a cantata, 'Owain Glyndwr,' which remained popular for some years. His solo 'Bugeiles y Wyddfa' was popular for many years. At an eisteddfod held in 1885 at Llandudno he won the prize for an opera, 'Dafydd ap Siencyn.' He left S. Asaph for Rhyl in 1878; later he went to live at Caernarvon.

He died 29 May 1899 and was buried in Llanbeblig churchyard.
