son of John Jones, Lleddfa, Machynlleth. He went up from Friars School, Bangor, to Jesus College, Oxford, in February 1804 (during the same year he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn), and graduated in 1808. From 1809 to 1815 he was curate of Llanfihangel Ysgeifiog (Anglesey), from 1815 to 1819 curate of Llanfair-is-gaer, and from 1819 rector of Llanllyfni (both in Caernarfonshire). He published seven sermons, but was interested chiefly in antiquities; he was one of the earliest members of the Cambrian Archaeological Association and wrote much in Archæologia Cambrensis and also in Y Brython, Golud yr Oes, and other periodicals. Some of these articles were separately published, at Carmarthen and Tenby (1822). He left a good deal of unprinted work. He died 12 February 1863, and was buried at Llanllyfni. He used the pseudonym Llef o'r Nant.

It is difficult to be certain about the year of his birth: Foster would make it 1786 or 1787, but his tombstone gives his age at death as 81, which would make 1782 the year of birth.
