Born at Tanrhiw, Llanycil on 21 May 1843; his father was John Jones, and his mother Mary née Jones was a grand-daughter of Dafydd Cadwaladr. He was educated at the Bala grammar school; the biographical sketch in Cennad Catholig Cymru states that he also received private tuition from John Williams (Ab Ithel). In 1862 he entered Jesus College, Oxford, intending to prepare for Anglican orders, but before completing his course he was received into the Roman Catholic church by John Henry Newman, on 18 October 1865. Some time afterwards he entered S. Edmund's Theological College, Ware, and later became a student at the S. Beuno Jesuit College, Tremeirchion, Flintshire. For a period in 1871 he was in deacon's orders at Bangor, where he preached in Welsh and English. In 1872 he was given priest's orders and on Palm Sunday in that year he began his long ministry as priest at Caernarvon, where he remained, highly respected by all, until in 1908 he was transferred to S. Mary's College, Holywell, where he was appointed tutor in Welsh. He died at Holywell, 15 December 1910. He translated several devotional works into Welsh, including the Prayer Book issued by S. Teilo's Society, and some hymns.
