Thereafter his whole life was spent in the service of Liverpool University , and it is acknowledged that, thanks to his organizing ability, he played an important part in its development. He was a lecturer in history ( 1913-19 ) and an associate professor from 1924 until his death; in 1928 he was also appointed librarian of the university.

He published ‘ A Welsh Sunday epistle ’ ( Mackay Miscellany ); ‘ Bosworth Field, an episode of Welsh history ’ ( Trans. Liverpool Welsh National Society ), 1912 ; York and Lancaster ( Bell's ‘Source Books of English History’ ); ‘ Welsh Nationalism and Henry Tudor ’ ( Trans. Cymm. , 1917-18 ).

In 1923 he m. Eluned , only daughter of ( Sir ) John Edward Lloyd of Bangor . He d. 28 May 1937 and was buried in the family grave at Flaybrick cemetery , Birkenhead . A memorial carved by Tyson Smith was set up in the Cohen library , University of Liverpool.
