Born at Tyn-y-pant, Llanwrtyd, Brecknock, 6 February 1850. He devoted his leisure to the study of such antiquities as lay within his reach and to the collection of local lore, including history and tradition, folk-lore, sayings, and proverbs, and was a frequent contributor to Cymru (O.M.E.) - e.g. vols, 65, 66, 67, and 69, Y Geninen, and other periodicals. Part of his collection was bequeathed to the National Library of Wales.

Extensive collections of his MSS are in the Museum of Welsh Life, St. Fagans - nos. 1793/1-654, 2038/1-137 and 2384/1-186.
