When he was about 5 years old the family moved to the tenement of

. He was apprenticed as a
carpenter

, who specialized in the
making of threshing machines
. He migrated to
London
to
serve in a milk-walk and to tend cattle
for a widowed Englishwoman and her daughter. He m. the daughter and came into considerable wealth. His name appears in the earliest printed reports of
Jewin (C.M.) church
, and continues there till his death. At first, he resided in
Fitzroy Road
,
Regent's Park
, and, from
1896
, in
Barforth Road
,
Peckham
. He spent his leisure
writing essays for competition at local eisteddfodau
. He won some of the principal awards for essays in
Welsh
at national eisteddfodau, beginning in
1901
with an essay on ‘
The Trend of philosophical and theological thought in Wales at the present time
’; a ‘
List with short notes, of Notable Welshmen, 1700-1900
,’ in
1906
; and an essay on ‘
The Influence of the Romans on the language, civilization, and physical constitution of the Welsh
,’ which shared the prize, in
1910
. His ‘
List of Notable Welshmen
’ has been a valuable source for the present Dictionary, though only a part of it (A — H) was published [in
1908
; the manuscript of the remainder is at
N.L.W.
, except the entries under J and K, which are lost. The work contains more entries than any other Welsh biographical dictionary covering its period.] He was buried at
