A native of Cyfeiliog. Two examples of his work have been found in manuscript, these being elegies upon members of the landed families of Carno and Manafon, Montgomeryshire. A genealogical manuscript in the hand of Gruffudd Hiraethog (Peniarth MS 176 ) acknowledges a similar manuscript of Hywel's, but no existing example of the poet's genealogical work is known at present.
