HUGHES , THOMAS ( 1854 - 1928 ), Wesleyan minister ; b. 25 Oct. 1854 at Rhuddlan . He was educated at the National School at Rhuddlan and at S. Asaph grammar school . He was admitted to Aberystwyth College ( 1875 ), ordained to the ministry ( 1877 ), and sent to the Headingley Theological College , Leeds ( 1877-80 ). After spending a year at Shaftesbury , Dorset , he started his work in the Welsh churches. He laboured at Widnes ( 1881 ), Pen-y-groes, Caerns. ( 1882 ), Bootle ( 1883 ), Birmingham ( 1884 ), Meifod ( 1886 ), Llanfairfechan ( 1887 ), Wrexham ( 1890 ), Tre-garth ( 1893 ), Shaw Street circuit, Liverpool ( 1896 ), Tregarth ( 1899 ), Mount Zion , Liverpool ( 1902 ), Shaw Street , Liverpool ( 1905 ), Bangor ( 1908 ), Llandudno ( 1911 ), Port Dinorwic ( 1914 ), Abergele ( 1918 ), and Llangefni ( 1921 ). He retired in 1924 and d. 15 Dec. 1928 .

He m. in 1887 Blanche , daughter of Samuel Davies II (q.v.) , chairman of the North Wales province . He was president of the Welsh Wesleyan assembly ( 1907 ); chairman of the second province of North Wales ( 1911-24 ); president of the North Wales Council of Evangelical Churches ( 1914-15 ); a member of the council of the University College of North Wales ( 1925-8 ); and one of the chief initiators of Llyfr Emynau'r Methodistiaid Calfinaidd a Wesleyaidd , 1927 . He was elected to the Legal Hundred of his denomination ( 1910 ). He was also the means of establishing a fund to enable candidates for the ministry in his denomination to go to a Welsh university college .

He edited Y Winllan , 1894-7 , and Yr Eurgrawn Wesleyaidd , 1912-28 . He published Esboniad ar yr Actau ; Ymneilltuaeth Eglwys Loegr ; Cofiant John Evans, Eglwysbach (jointly with J. P. Roberts ); an essay, ‘ Beirniadaeth y Beibl, ei Hegwyddorion Cyffredinol a'i Gwerth ’; articles to the Geiriadur Beiblaidd ; and the introduction to Llestri'r Trysor , 1914 .
