. His father d. before he was born and the family moved to
Portmadoc
, where he was given an elementary education at
Pont-ynys-galch British school
. He followed his craft as a
sail-maker
until he was 25 years of age, when he began to
preach
. He received additional training at
Clynnog school
(
1866-7
) and
Bala College
(
1867-71
) and was ordained in
1873
. In
1872
he became
minister
of
Brynengan
,
Brynkir
, and
Garndolbenmaen
churches. Seven years later he gave up the last named of these but he looked after the other two for forty-five years. Early in his career he began to take an
interest in the history of his denomination
and was entrusted with the task of
writing the history of Methodism
in
Llŷn
and
Eifionydd
. This history was never written, although he spent the rest of his life gathering material for it; some of his gleanings, however, are to be found in articles written for

Cymru (O.M.E.)

Y Geninen
, and
Cylchgrawn Cymdeithas Hanes y Methodistiaid Calfinaidd
