HAMER, EDWARD (c. 18401911), antiquary; b. c. 1830 at Llanidloes, Mont., son of Meredith Hamer [of the Close, a fuller. From Battersea training college (where he won a gold medal,)] he went to teach in Monmouthshire — at Snatchwood, Tal-y-waun (1867), and at Abersychan (1875). In 1878 he returned to Llanidloes, where he lived for some years [as book-keeper to a relation in the cabinet-making business.] He then moved to Birmingham, and is thought to have d. there early in the present century. His first published work was The Chartist Outbreak at Llanidloes (1867, 2nd ed. in 1939). He was a contributor to Arch. Camb. (e.g. ‘Earthworks of Ancient Arwystli’), and to Mont. Coll., in which were published his articles on the parish history of Llangurig (1869-70), of Llanidloes (1871-8), and of Trefeglwys (1879, uncompleted). He also gave assistance to W. V. Lloyd (q.v.) in compiling his Sheriffs of Montgomeryshire, and to J. Y. W. Lloyd (q.v.) in the preparation of his History of Powys Fadog.
