In 1897 he undertook a botanical exploration in the borderlands of Siam and Malaya, but resumed his academic work at Glasgow (he specialized on ferns) in 1899, remaining at Glasgow till 1907, when he became head of the botany department in Birkbeck College, London. In 1911 he became professor of botany at Belfast. He was appointed professor at Reading in 1915, but died there, 4 September, in the same year.
