Particulars of many of the members of this family are given in The Family of Griffith of Garn and Plasnewydd … as registered in the College of Arms from the beginning of the XIth century. Edited … by T. A. Glenn (London, privately printed, 1934), a work based on family and other documents. The descent is traced from Eadwine of Atiscross, the Edwin of Tegeingl of genealogists. At least two members of this family were poets, viz. Ieuan ap Llywelyn Fychan (died 1532), and his son Gruffydd ap Ieuan ap Llywelyn Fychan (c. 1485 - 1553); the father lived at Llannerch, in the township of Llewenni, Denbighshire, a house afterwards associated with the Davies family, of Llannerch and Gwysaney. A ' Cowydd i'r Crud ' by him is in NLW MS 3048D . T. A. Glenn, who could not (in 1934) accept some of the conclusions reached by the editor of Detholiad o Waith Gruffudd ab Ieuan ap Llewelyn Vychan (Bangor, 1910), was able to throw additional light on the career of the bard. Gruffydd ap Ieuan's first wife was Janet, daughter of Richard ap Howel (see Mostyn of Mostyn); his successor in the Griffith line was THOMAS AP GRIFFITH AP IEUAN, his son by his second wife, Alice, daughter of John Owen, Tre Bwll, Llansantffraid, Denbighshire. Thereafter there is a succession of men who served their county or their country in various ways. EDWARD GRIFFITH (1589 - 1671?), grandson of Gruffydd ap Ieuan ap Llywelyn Fychan, was a Royalist; he was lieutenant colonel of the Denbigh militia, and one of the defenders of Denbigh castle during the civil war. After the Restoration he became clerk to the court of great sessions for Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire. JOHN WYNNE GRIFFITH (1763 - 1834), recorder of Denbigh, 1817-34, was returned as M.P. for Denbigh Boroughs in 1818 and again in 1826, and was a prominent agriculturist. EDWARD HUMPHREY GRIFFITH (1792 - 1872), one of whose seats was Gwastadfryn in the parish of Llanfihangel-y-pennant, Meironnydd, was sheriff of that county for the year 1850-1.
