FOULKES, PETER (1676-1747), scholar and divine,
third son of Robert Foulkes, of Llechryd, Denbs., and Jane Ameredith of Landulph, Cornwall. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. 1698 (M.A., 1701, D.D. 1710). He was appointed canon of Exeter, 1704, sub-dean, 1723, chancellor, May 1724, precentor, 1731. He was made canon of Christ Church in Nov. 1724 and was sub-dean, 1725-33. He was instituted rector of Cheriton Bishop, Devon, in 1714 and vicar of Thorverton, 1716. His first wife, Elizabeth Bidgood of Rockbeare, Devon, whom he m. in 1707, d. in 1737. In Dec. 1738 he m. Anne Holwell, a widowed daughter of bishop Blackall of Exeter. While still an undergraduate he published, in conjunction with John Freind, an edition of Aeschines against Ctesiphon and Demosthenes on the Crown (Oxford, 1696). Latin poems of his were published in 1695, 1699, 1727; and A Sermon preached in the Cathedral Church of Exeter on Jan. 30, 1723 was also published. He d. 30 April 1747 and was buried in Exeter cathedral.
