EVANS, HUGH (Hywel Eryri ; 1767-1841?), poet; b. in the parish of Llanfair-mathafarn-eithaf, Anglesey. A weaver by trade, he lived in Aber-erch, Chwilog, Plas Madog in the parish of Clynnog, and Pen-y-groes, Caerns. He wrote a cywydd on the subject of ‘Cariad’ for a Bangor eisteddfod held c. 1790 and another in 1802 on ‘Drylliad y llong Minerva, Ion. 21, 1802.’ Much of his work appeared in the North Wales Chronicleand in Welsh periodicals: three or four ballads by him were printed separately. He d. at Pen-y-groes some time after May 1840.
