EDWARDS, JOHN (1799 - 1873?), musician

Born at Cwmbran-fach in the parish of Llansadwrn, Carmarthenshire. A shoemaker by trade, he spent his life in Llangadock, Carmarthenshire. Taught the elements of music by Dafydd Siencyn Morgan, he was precentor at the local Methodist chapel for many years, during ten years of which he acted also as parish clerk. He conducted classes in music almost every evening in some village or other; he was also regarded as a good player on the clarinet. A hymn-tune which he composed earned for him a prize awarded by the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion. His first tune, ' Grongar,' appeared in Seren Gomer, 1824, other hymn-tunes by him being published in Haleliwia, Haleliwia Drachefn, Telyn Seion (Rosser Beynon), and Caniadau Seion (R. Mills); he also composed some anthems. He reviewed Gramadeg (John Mills) and Caniadau Seion in Yr Haul, 1839. He died c. 1873 and was buried in Llangadock parish churchyard.
