DAVIES , THOMAS ( 1820 - 1873 ), Independent minister ;

b. at Tre-lech, Carms. , 3 April 1820 , where he became a member of the church, 8 April 1838 . While still young he went to Maesteg, Glam. , to work, returning in 1841 to attend the British school at Tre-lech . After a year at Thomas's school , Carmarthen , he went to Brecon College , 1843-7 , where he was an exceptionally assiduous student. He made a reputation for himself as a highly acceptable preacher . He was ordained at Llandilo (Carms.) Tabernacle , 10 and 11 Aug. 1847 ; had charge of Hermon chapel , Llansadwrn , 1847-50 ; and toured America in 1871 . As he had an attractive personality and was a naturally fluent speaker, he was one of the most popular and influential preachers of his day. The membership of his church increased greatly during the period of his ministry and he established a day school in the chapel building. He was a frequent contributor to Y Diwygiwr , Y Beirniad , and other periodicals, and was the author of Hanes Cenedl y Cymry ; Cofiant y Parch. T. Jenkins, Penygroes ; Bywyd ac Ysgrifeniadau D. Rees, Llanelli ; Catecism Cenhadol . He d. 28 Oct. 1873 .
