DAVIES , SAMUEL (‘ the 2nd ’ ; 1818 - 1891 ), Wesleyan minister ;

b. at Denbigh , 1818 , son of David and Anne Davies . He was admitted to the ministry in 1843 . He edited Y Winllan , 1854-5 , and was editor of Yr Eurgrawn Wesleyaidd for two periods, 1859-65 and 1875-86 . He was secretary of the province of North Wales , 1858-65 , and chairman of the same province, 1866-86 . He published a memoir of Samuel Davies ‘ the 1st ’ (q.v.) under the title Samuel Davies a'i Amserau ; he also published a memoir of Thomas Aubrey (q.v.) , 1887 . In 1875 he was elected a member of the ‘ Legal Hundred .’ He was a profoundly serious evangelical preacher and an admirable organizer both by temperament and training. In consequence of his strong common sense, his balanced judgment, his culture, and his unsparing industry, he became one of the outstanding Welsh Wesleyan leaders of his time. His principal characteristics may be summed up in the word ‘usefulness.’ He d. at Amlwch 7 June 1891 and was buried at Glanadda , Bangor .
