Josiah
was taken to
London
by his uncle and received training from him and
Richard
Earlom
; afterwards young
Boydell
and
Joseph
Farrington
were engaged by the uncle to
make drawings for the engravers
from pictures in the
Houghton Collection
before they were removed to the
Hermitage
,
Leningrad
.
Josiah
prepared several of the subjects for the ‘
Shakespeare Gallery
’ issued by
John
Boydell
; he also
painted a portrait of his uncle
. His first picture was exhibited at the
Royal Academy
in
1772
; afterwards, until
1799
, a number of his portraits and historical subjects were on view there. He also made several mezzotints after
Van Dyck
and
Rembrandt
. He d. at
Halliford
,
Middlesex
,
27 March 1817
, and was buried in
Hampstead
Churchyard.
